Subway is the largest fast food chain by number of restaurants with over 40,000 outlets world-wide. In 1965, founders Fred DeLuca and Peter Buck opened the first restaurant in Bridgeport, Connecticut. They began franchising the Subway brand in 1974. The international expansion starting in the 80s paved the way for further growth. Compared to other fast food restaurants, start-up costs for franchisees are exceptionally low – another reason for Subway’s success.
Subway’s menu is extremely simple. The only main product is the submarine sandwich which is served in foot-long and 6 inch sizes. The sandwiches are made to order, giving customers the choice between a several different breads, toppings, and sauces. The most popular varieties are the Italian B.M.T., Tuna, and the Subway Club.
